It’s so difficult to quantify what an interesting story is. I don’t necessarily see myself as an incredibly interesting guy, but I do see the stories that I participate in as incredibly interesting. Maybe it’s just interesting to me, pedestrians, other people, and I have a wayward thinking rhythm about what deserves attention. Either way, I have a short story about these rings. I first moved over from the East Coast roughly 6 years ago. And just like any musician, you need a break. And I don’t mean a break as in a momentary stop to what you’re doing, I mean break as in a moment where you cross over into the realm of attention. And this was my way of kickstarting where I was after traveling from where I began.
A beautiful location in Portland had allowed me to open a table to advertise my photography. I looked at my advantages and disadvantages. One major disadvantage is that I was new to the community, a major advantage was that I was an unprecedented and unpredictable vendor. This gave me a lot of leeway in starting fresh. I got to know the coordinator, I got to know the other vendors, and at some point, I’m pretty sure people started to copy what I was doing the day of. If there was anything I would advise learning in college, it’s learning how to be social in respect of businesses. Growing up I thought it was ridiculous that so much business conversation happens on golf courses, though now as an adult, I can understand why. After arriving at the open house as a vendor, I set up something that I knew I could produce consistently. A little ring photo shoot box tabletop.
The flash got the attention of any audience stopping by, and I could produce a photo to give away immediately. This is answering the need for instant gratification for many of my generation but also producing a consistent quality product. To be clear, I do not think our generation is impatient, I just believe that we have a higher standard of living in the modern age. We also have a desire to uplift others into that higher standard of living, and this all influences my need to create not only good photos but portfolio-ready images. I decided to create this preset in honor of that moment where I went from being an absolute nobody in the area to booking 12 weddings within a month. Here are the rings of the first six couples that helped me get started in this area.
The preset itself is designed around a lens that is currently defunct. So I wasn’t able to match the exposure exactly to where I want it, and not nearly to the quality that I can produce currently with my new macro lens. So perhaps I will revisit this collection in the future, I just need 12 brides to give me their engagement rings. The preset lens itself is being used with a flash and a bit of fall off in the light. This means you’re going to have a balanced setting of bright lights and deep shadows.
