One of the great benefits of living in the Pacific Northwest is how much we connect in nature. Day trips to the beach, endless mountains to climb, the river gorge to explore, and the great vast forests. But since I've made my home in Portland, it's easy to forget that there are adventures right outside the door. A beautiful urban landscape that has an eclectic amount of opportunities to photograph. A few years ago I went out with my friend Grace to just explore a couple of different portrait options. The day was perfect, a cloudy overcast day in the neighborhoods. We stopped by one of the local favorite cafes and had our choice of tea and coffee. And then we went to explore, we really wanted to find out what was directly around us in the neighborhood that meets the city.

Surprisingly we didn't have to go very far, one of the best places that we were able to photograph was a loading yard to one of the local businesses. Somebody decided to make a little bit of artwork and add a little bit of color to a dingy little corner. I made this preset to complement those background tones while also playing nice with lighter skin tones. The overcast sky gave us a little bit of cover to allow me to avoid dealing with deep shadows.

The recommended usage for Tone Wall would be outside on preferably cloudy days for portrait photoshoots. You will still need to do your own white balance, but using the Tone Wall Preset allows you to skip over all the other extra steps. We also recommend greys and neutrals in the photos to best pair with this preset.
